TARR Gives Back

Distilling spirits in Lexington, Ky has intertwined our community with the business of bourbon since 1879 when local volunteer fire fighters battled a fierce blaze at the Ashland Distillery with hand tubs and wash buckets.  The Distillery burnt to the ground, but not the resolve of those that lived in Lexington, or those that distilled spirits.  From this fire, a city waterworks company was formed by local businesses to help lower insurance rates and to fight fires that often ravished urban dwellings like distilleries and thatched roof houses. Tarr rebuilt and reorganized the distillery.

RD#1 Bourbon is reviving William Tarr’s Distillery that last operated in Lexington 125 years ago.  We are also reviving the spirit of Tarr, and his philanthropic philosophies of helping your neighbor and your community.

We pledge to do this through three avenues:

Economic Development

We have claimed the historic brand to preserve it for Lexington and to contribute to the economy of this region. Our beginnings are humble, but our vision is grand. Over the next few years, we will produce multiple high quality Kentucky bourbon and whiskey products, employ more people, draw tourists and locals to Lexington’s Distillery District, and expand our distillery and distribution.

Sustainable Practices

As a regulated industry, it's important for consumers to know our products are made through sustainable practices. The water drawn from Kentucky streams and creeks, the grains that comprise our mash bills, and the white oak for aging whiskey can and should be used with care. After all, even the fluctuations of weather can significantly impact the taste of our all-natural products.

Our membership in the Kentucky Distillers' Association helps drive sustainability studies and practices. Below is a summary of the industry's latest environmental benchmarking report:
